Posted on 02 April 2008 by admin

The funny thing about inspiration is that you never know when it's going to hit you. I happened to be trying to come up with a color scheme for a site I was designing, and after about an hour of disasters, I saw the London Calling album sitting on my desk, and knew those were the colors I wanted.
I decided to see if any other album covers had nice color schemes, and was surprised that most of them do. I took the time to create downloadable color palettes for Rolling Stone's Top 20 albums of all time. I'm very happy with the results, and hope a few other designers can use these for inspiration. Enjoy the list!

Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned veteran these tools, tutorials, lists and other resources are great sites for any web designer. Organized into helpful categories (design inspiration, CSS resources, web design guides, color tools, free fonts and more) this collection not only has useful resources but also categorized links to other lists with 100s more. If you’re not a designer but still need to create sites you still might be best off spending a few bucks on a web page creation tool with a simple GUI than hiring a designer but can still use the first section below and these great wallpapers to get design inspiration!

Typography is more than being legible and looking good. Among other things, effective typography manages to achieve two important objectives: a) to create an appropriate atmosphere and enable users to develop trust toward the site and b) to make sure visitors get the main message of the site and (if possible) become interested in the services offered on the site. Since written text is the most efficient instrument to communicate with visitors precisely and directly, the power of typography shouldn’t be underestimated.

            From the Site:

CSS galleries can be a great source of inspiration, but if
you’re looking for something in particular they can be a bit of a
nightmare. They can also be a little repetitive, you’ll often
find the same design repeated on many of the galleries.
Since niche galleries have a tighter focus it allows them to be more
detailed when adding sites to the gallery, and although they
don’t update as often the quality usually makes up for it. Given
their focus the same design is a lot less likely to be featured on more
than one of the niche galleries.
This is not to say the general galleries are going away, they
provide a steady steam of inspiration, but when you’re looking
for something in particular niche is nicer.
Below you’ll find a list of niche galleries, that focus on
things from color schemes, to layout, and specific content types.

Continuing in the theme of web design inspiration, I decided to take the time and make downloadable color palettes using colors inspired by Rolling Stone's Top 10 Albums of all time. People love album covers, and there's a reason - they're cool to look at - and a big part of their coolness is usually the colors. So, for your next website project, consider using the colors of one of these great albums.
